Mark's 4WDs

My current 4WD is an 80 series Toyota Landcruiser (4.2l diesel, standard model). Its a quantum leap from my previous 4WD's in offroad ability and comfort. Extras fitted include dual batteries, underbonnet mounted ARB air compressor, safari snorkel (not fitted when this picture was taken), 8,000lb Ramsay winch, cargo barrier and draw system, rear mounted spare tyre with Hi-lift jack, Cibie Super Oscar spotties, ARB full length roof rack, Old Man Emu shocks and raised springs and front diff lock (lockright). I think its now quite nicely set up for long distance off-road touring. Its pictured here well and truly stuck in one of our favourite mud holes. A quick snatch soon had me mobile again.

My cruiser stuck!

Ugly but Tough!!!.

My previous 4WD was a Lada Niva. While not being in the same league as the Cruiser, it was streets ahead for on and off road comfort compared to my first 4WD while still being a tough 4WD. It lacked front wheel travel when the going got tough, but a little extra momentum usually made up for it. Extras fitted included a 65l long range tank (plus 40l standard tank). Being a Russian vehicle, it had a heater that could fry eggs in the middle of winter, but it also had a tendency to overheat in summer when going through thick sand in low range
This was my first 4WD, a Diahatsu F50 (2.5l diesel). It was (eventually) fitted with Old Man Emu shocks, raised springs and dual batteries. Being a diesel it was not particularly fast (or economical for a diesel) but it did have good torque down low (compared to my brothers 1.6  F20 Diahatsu). It served me well for some years and was a great vehicle to begin learning about 4WDriving in.

My Diahatsu beast!
