Mundaring Hill climbs - 16 June 2002

The trip begun with meeting at the top of Greenmount hill at 8:30 am on a very brisk but pleasant morning. Everyone rolled up on time, and we hit the road at precisely 9am (well done guys!). Crawford led the convoy, and Captain was tail end charlie, with skip helping out from mid-field. We went in a few K's passed Mundaring, cutting though some scenic bush and meeting up with the pipeline, which we then followed for some time, eventually crossing over Mundaring weir road into Hill country. It did not take long for the first hill to create some action, as Brettski got some air (pics 3 and 4). We then followed the normal hill climb circuit, taking a small detour down into a valley then up a rock face for a very scenic morning tea break (pics 6 to 11). After that, it was straight into the hills, with several vehicles having trouble on the first big hill (pics 12 to 16). At this point my digital camera ran out of batteries, and so I had to put it on charge for a while, missing the damage and removal of the LPG tank's bash plate from an 80 series cruiser. We had lunch at the mud flat on top of Blackboy hill, for about an hour, and several vehicles went down and back up this mighty un-forgiving hill. Vehicles that made this hill un-assisted were the C6 Jeep, THe Discovery, Alan's Nissan Patrol, and Pete's Cruiser nearly made it, but had to be pulled up a section  - the first recovery of the day (a gentle pull using 2 snatch ropes). After lunch (with my batteries charged) we proceeded onto the next nasty hill descent, but were unable to have a go going back up due to a bunch of other vehicles wanting to come up the hill (pics 18 to 24). We then moved onto CV hill, were several vehicles had problems getting up, but all managed it eventually, without assistance (pics 25 to 44). This includes My Hilux, and Brettski's shorty 40, which have the least suspension articulation. After that, we headed back towards the main road, but stopped and had a little play in a mud pit on the way, where we got to recover Brettski by winch (pics 47 to 54) and then a gravel pit that we found, where we all had a go at testing our ramp-over angles and suspension articulation (pics 55 onwards). As you can clearly see by my back wheel being high in the air, my hilux does not have good travel. The same test with the 80 series cruisers kept all wheels on the ground. Someone then dared Brettski to drive 1 wheel onto a tree stump....we didn't actually think he would do it! It was a very nice day indeed.
